The Westport Weston Family Y offers a nationally accredited childcare program for preschool children. The program is immensely popular, even though it is housed in the basement of the original Bedford building. In fact, the childcare program is so popular that scores of families are turned away every year. The Y also offers the only after-school program in town. Thanks to the Y, hundreds of Westport children have a safe place to do their homework, work on arts and crafts or play sports until their parents return home from work.

The Family Y is not a private health club. It is a nonprofit organization (like the many churches and synagogues in town), which strives to meet the social needs of Westport. The Y is a membership organization, which accepts everyone regardless of religion, national origin, or ability to pay fees.
The Y will use no tax money to build its new home.  true
The Westport Weston Family Y will build its new facility on its own property at no cost to Westport taxpayers. In fact, the Y intends to make improvements that will benefit everyone. The Y will upgrade the northbound Exit 41 ramp of the Merritt Parkway and it will add new traffic signalization when it improves Mahackeno.
Moving the Y will increase tax revenue.  true
The Westport Weston Family Y currently operates at two locations; its main facility on Post Road East and its Mahackeno campground. Because the Family Y is tax-exempt (a status granted by the Internal Revenue Service), neither of its locations are on the Westport tax rolls. The Y intends to consolidate its activities at Mahackeno and sell its Post Road building to Bedford Square Associates. After the move is completed, the original Westport Weston YMCA building will generate tax revenue.

The Westport Weston Family Y has hired the world-renowned firm of Robert R.M. Stern Architects to create its new facility at Mahackeno. The founder and namesake of the firm, Robert Stern, is Dean of the Yale School of Architecture. The project’s lead architect lives in Westport, so he has a personal and professional stake in making sure the new Mahackeno Y is something the entire town can be proud of.
